A Preliminary Design Review (PDR) is a vital process in satellite development. However, its meaning might not be clear to everyone. This post will answer the questions regarding the PDR done for SUTS.
What is a PDR?
A Preliminary Design Review, or PDR, is a formal evaluation of the proposed technical design. This process is used in engineering projects to see that the design is solid enough to proceed with more detailed development stages.
What is the purpose of the PDR?
The goal is to identify risks early, resolve any issues and ensure the design is mature enough to proceed to the detailed design phase.
Who is involved in the process?
The SUTS engineers are responsible for providing the necessary documents. The mentors and partners of the Student Satellite will review the documentation and give feedback.

What does the process look like?
The PDR process begins with a clear concept of how the satellite is intended to function. This concept must be supported by working prototypes of the satellite’s subsystems to ensure that the design can be developed further.
Next, the engineering team documents all critical aspects of each subsystem, including how they interact with one another. For example, the hardware of the Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) should be integrated with the software to determine the satellite’s orientation in space.
Following the documentation phase, team members working on the SUTS PDR review each other’s work. This peer-review step helps reduce the risk of missing key specifications or including illogical details. It also serves as an initial round of “cleaning” that improves clarity and consistency across all documents.
Finally, SUTS team members present their finalised documentation to mentors and project partners. The following discussion allows everyone involved to express concerns or suggestions regarding the satellite’s further development. This feedback is invaluable for identifying potential risks and refining the design.
After the PDR, the engineering team addresses the necessary improvements. All that will ensure that we can move forward with further development of the SUTS satellite.
